For the Love of Bags

Coming from a tropical land, I see woven bags all the time - usually woven out of mengkuang leaves or bamboo. Such bags have a tendency to have an ethnic look around them. But not the Bottega Veneta.

Ever since I saw a picture of the signature Bottega Veneta woven bag online, I knew I’d like it. I had the opportunity to finally see one in real life the last time I was in Singapore. Just as I suspected, the bag was so soft and smooth to the touch, despite the fact it was woven.

The Bottega Veneta woven bag is woven out of strips of nappa leather - the softest leather around. It has a very simple yet classic hobo design and fits beautifully on the shoulder. The bag itself is quite light, to my surprise. I’m so used to branded leather bags weighing a ton. But not this one.

The other thing I like is that there is nothing on the bag that advertises that you are carrying a Bottega Veneta. People either take one look at the bag and know that you are, or they don’t know any better. I love that!

This beauty cost S$4,000 (>RM8,000). OUCH OUCH OUCH!!!

There is no way I am spending close to 10 grand on a bag, no matter how I love bags and no matter how beautiful this one is. So, I’m on the hunt for a look alike. I have seen one for a tiny fraction of the price. I’ll see if I get it and I’ll update when I do!

I’m uncertain why but I’m suddenly taken in by the Fendi Mama shoulder bag.

I used to hate Fendi because of the baguette bag. It never grew on me in terms of style or design. However, the Fendi Mama bag looks like a classic that will survive the test of time.

From the side, one can see that it is wider at the base which means that there is room for all my everyday stuff that I carry in my bags - makeup pouch, keys, wallet, tissue paper, namecards etc etc etc…

I’ve seen it in the traditional brown canvas but this is the first time I’m seeing it in Gold. I love it!! I wonder how much it costs though. The site says EU400 which is about RM1,800.

A Chanel classic quilted bag also known as the Chanel 2.55 bag.

I’m not exactly enamoured with the choice of color in this picture, but it is the style that I love and covet.

I steeled myself to walk into the Chanel boutique in KLCC once, and picked up a gorgeous 2.55 bag from the shelf. It was of the softest lambskin and a bright fire engine red with a gold chain strap. My kind of color, my kind of bag.

It also cost RM6,000 at the time.

I swore I’d own it one day. But I’ve never been able to put the money down for this Chanel classic.
